When first married I remember boiled rice was my evening meal, I had to borrow some jam to put with it!

You get more value for your money from supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi, just my opinion.

    bulk cooking,

frozen vegetables etc are reasonably priced than fresh ones.

Sometimes the supermarkets reduce price towards end of the day, when I worked at M&S part time whilst studying got some decent bargains and will be expiring soon or near expiry date.

You can't do that around where I live, the supermarkets rarely reduce anything any more and it's usually only a few pence. Other times I've seen scuffles break out with lots of pushing and grabbing so I think that's also partly why it stopped. Usually cheaper for them to just bin it I suppose especially when they are short staffed
True things have probably changed worked in retail 2007-2012. There is a fruit and Vegetables box saw post about at Lidl you get a wide variety for around £1.50 subject to availability

Comparing prices, Budgeting, bulk cooking and buying store branded stuff probably the best for low-cost options.

£!.50 it is, you just get a boxful, you don't get to choose the contents but you can select which box. They're different.

  • £10 was doable 10 years ago, now it is completely unreasonable unless you want to eat generic cereal three times a day.

  • Boiled eggs with green tea. It is also perfect to lose weight quickly. :)
  • Back when I was married I hit a rough patch money wise. He was posted and I’d no money (he didn’t want me working so I was skint). Having gently exhausted friends and family I ended up eating salt+pepper on toast as my main meal. It didn’t do me a lot of good but at least I wasn’t hungry. Prolly be ok short term though.
I removed the shell from my racing snail, but now it's more sluggish than ever.

I used to eat that as a kid in the 60's, but also had vinegar on it as well (posh).  Not tried it recently but still eat my fav Dripping if I can get hold of any from the butchers when we go to Halifax market but I have Bovril on it now rather than just salt. I would eat that everyday if I could but not really healthy.

Another variation on the toast, cinnamon toast, toasted one side then prinkled with sugar and cinnamon and toasted until crunchy. That was the after school snack. Or a cup of hot stock, basically a mug of hot water with half a stock cube.

  • I used to live next door to a woman that had a teaspoon of marmite in a mug of hot water. She claimed it was good for the blood (or something).

I love marmite so I tried it once and it was vile.
