I took my CS pension In June this year, the last four years of my service was in the Alpha scheme the remainder in Classic (28 years). I’m told that in October next year that owing to the McCloud judgement I will be offered the chance to have all my pension under the classic arrangements. Would anyone care to speculate as to what I can expect?
I have it in my head that I’ll be offered the 4 years worth of the ‘lump sum’ I didn’t get because Alpha doesn’t give you an automatic lump sum and if I accept that my monthly pension will reduce because the accrual rate for Classic is less generous than Alpha.
Am I on the right lines with that?

  • You will get the choice of 2015 - 2022 in either Classic or Alpha. Do look at the calculations because Classic won’t necessarily be ‘better’ than Alpha, but it all depends on your circumstances and wishes. For example I will still get more pension if I choose Alpha and commute to the equivalent lump sum ( only about £200 a year, but something is better than nothing). If you had a late promotion then Classic is likely to be better.

You will get the choice sometime after October 2023, but as to when is anyone’s guess. MyCsp is not providing a satisfactory service at all I’m afraid.

I did a rough calculation for my wife and it seemed little difference between the two.
She has had minimal pay rises since 2015 and prior.
