Saving for children's future

I'm interested in how other people save for their children's future (as still figuring out how best to do so!)

Do you put an amount away a month/as and when you have, and is that amount based on what feels affordable in comparison to current priorities or do you have a figure you're trying to achieve. If the latter, how have you come to that figure? Where have you chosen to save this money? (I imagine this will be dependent on age had children and age of children somewhat)

I've started thinking about big life events I would like to support them with in future but feel I'm plucking figures and ideas out of the air somewhat! Would really like to get a bigger grasp on this now as our future selves would be grateful, I'm sure. Just trying to make it more tangible so makes easier to prioritise than day to day costs for now, which are increasing at such a rate!
