Jumbo oats do they go off

I made a flapjack fruit crumble today with oats that were 18 months passed their best before date. Whilst edible, the taste didn't seem to be same as the last one I made in Februrary using the same oates. Before I offer any to another person I wanted to check if oates can go off or if it just my taste may have changed a bit.

If the pack as been open I have found even if kept in a sealed container they can develop a stale taste. I noticed that a few years ago when I made the first porridge of the winter using oats not touched for six months even thought they were stored in a lock n lock box.

  • They go stale as all cereals do. You need to keep them air tight

If past the best add more flavour ;)

there probably not gone off as in bad (if they have been kept dry and not in a milduwy cupboard). but they have probably lost some of there 'goodness'. if you think they taste a bit stale then in a fruit crumble depending on the fruit i might add some nutmeg or mixed spice to some custard for serving? OH always knows how my baking has gone depending on if its served with custard or not :D

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

  • I did overbuy flour and jumbo oates a while ago and the baking I intended to do didn't happen. Perhaps it might be a good idea to admit I have wasted some and get some fresh oates and flour.

Make oat flapjacks but add some good flavourings . Or toast and make granola

I had an over stock of self raising flour from the start of lockdown, bought thinking ( as so many did ) that we wouldn't be allowed to the shops. I used it up in shortcrust pastry as it was the baking powder then went over

I still have some lockdown flour which I think I will get rid off. Not money saving but given the cost of other ingredients and cost of using the oven perhaps fresh flour will be better if it ensure a good product at the end.

I suspect both your oats and flour are fine.

just smell them- are they mouldy smelling? Try just making one thing from each: shame to waste food. I have certainly used flour that has been a year out of date.

  • Last year I dug out some fancy Flahavan's oats whilst at my parents (an open bag, looked and smelt fine), whipping up a bowl of porridge. I suspect the cupboard was a tad damp and it tasted utterly, utterly rancid, so sour and foul! However I survived to tell the tale. So you will probably be able to tell if it has gone off...
