Lack of training

Have you ever been in a job that they didn't train you properly? If so, what did you do?

If any managers/supervisors see this post it would be nice to know from their point of view if they were aware that the company was not providing adequate training to new employees and how they were handling the situation. Maybe the person they were assigning to do the training was not doing it properly etc.

As mentioned in a previous post after suffering some issues and having a bad manager I ended up seconded (indefinitely lol) to another team.

Whilst the new job externally was one to die for (well not literally, but a lot of people wanted to get into it) the reality was a bit darker, very introverted, little collaboration and I was pretty much left to it, with not a clue what to do. Whilst some of that was the normal team dynamic (or lack of it) as even now it's a very indifferent bunch, I think the original thought was I'd get fed up and jump. There was no buddying or training on offer and even finding out what systems I needed setting up for took weeks as nobody wanted to engage.

I made survival an objective, spent a fair whack of money on certifications outside of work, made a point of making myself more qualified than the manager I left (doesn't count for anything as he doesn't know but made me feel better), and I monitored other peoples work to reverse engineer how they undertook routine tasks. I then built on that as I actually found it wanting.

Still very much a work in progress but with a new manager but from feedback so far (apart from some bumps in the road due to burnout etc) I think it could have ended a lot worse. The next year rhe company has  put me on a number of courses as they did get a budget for it which is frankly good of them.

Whilst I think I'm part of a slightly toxic team (we do get on but there's a lot of avoiding tasks, refusal to answer questions or contribute if someone's stuck) I actually think we're responsible for our own knowledge. They pay me for the skills I can bring to the table, so to some extent I sort of view learning and training as something I need to sort myself, but if the company offers anything I'll take it.
