Personal tax account - how do we report changes or send a query re a letter received.

My husband has received a letter today regarding an amendment to his tax code for this financial year. Maybe he will get through to HMRC on monday morning after 8.a.m. We have logged in to his tax account using the government gateway but there doesn't seem to be a way of corresponding with the HMRC through this. Any advice would be welcome.

https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/income-tax-enquiries-for-individuals-pensioners-and-employees suggests that that channel can be used to notify changes to income or other details but isn't a mechanism for correspondence as such, so that would need to be phone or post.

You can't send secure messages via your personal tax account, so I'm afraid it really is going to be hanging on the phone (or writing).traceyaj said:My husband has received a letter today regarding an amendment to his tax code for this financial year. Phoning just before 8am seems to be the recommended option.traceyaj said:My husband has received a letter today regarding an amendment to his tax code for this financial year. But a lot of queries can be resolved on here without needing to even contact HMRC.
Or if contact is still needed people tend to be better informed after getting help on here first.
Sadly HMRC advisers are notorious for their complete lack of knowledge about how taxation of interest actually works 😳3 -

There was a time when HMRC used to attract the brightest of University graduates who were clever, knowledgeable and very well trained. You could even get to speak to them by asking for them by name. And then successive governments started tinkering around the edges to achieve what we have today.Good luck in your efforts to make contact!!1 -

And it is about time that HMRC fixed the problem?

I have hit "the computer says" brick wall with them before. At the end of the tax year guess which one of us was proved right !
