Query on selling shares.

I have no knowledge of the ins and outs hence my question.
If I bought shares of £5000 several years ago and sold them all for £13000 is the tax on £1000 or no tax as the profit was £8000. Bit of a disagreement as I think you would and partner says you wouldn't as it is on the gain only.
Can someone clear this up.
