Second jobs/ side hustles

Options
Hello,
The cost of living has prompted me to look at getting a part time job to do alongside my full time job. I know everyone’s different but I wondered if you have more than one job, how do you find it juggling so much (especially with a full time job)?
Thanks

  • I know I'm lucky, but my side hustle is something I genuinely love doing and would do even if I wasn't getting paid for it. It's also something I can set my own hours for. Are you looking for something with a more traditional employment structure?

Regimented. My life looks like this:
Weekdays: wake up at 7am, out to work by 8am, cook dinner after work which is around 6.30 pm, washing up (by hand), update budget/spend file, watch a little tv, bed…repeat
weekends: food shopping (using list), washing &ironing family clothes, diy, see elderly parents and do their errands.

    it’s manageable, but not easy.

Many years ago I worked weekend shift (6-6 Fri, Sat and Sun), then took a part time job in the week. Lasted about 3 months and that was pushing it. Everyone is different though and there's only one way for you to find out.

I am looking to moonlight or just earn extra money around my full time work, but I have realised my current contract seems to prevent me from doing this. I am going to talk to my employer, because I’ve had an offer to do theatre usher work. It’s great to have received an offer of extra work, although I am quite overwhelmed at my main job. I’m currently waiting to hear back from the theatre to see if they can offer more casual hours.

  • I've had 3 jobs at one time before (all part time, ended up about 6 days a week), and it is EXHAUSTING. not just from physically being at work so much, but the mental energy of working out hours and schedule etc. I couldn't imagine doing it alongside full time work unless it was something that could be done remotely.

Worth noting it can also really mess up your tax initially!

Moomin, is there any way of looking for a higher paid full time job or a raise at work? That would be my instinct rather than potentially burning yourself out.

    Hi there,
Thanks for sharing, I am not one who can juggle any more, I am already burning out and have had long covid symptoms since June.
I had to bite the bullet and say I wasn’t available for the casual work at the moment. They were very understanding.
Luckily things are going ok in my normal
job, so I’ll focus on that for now and see if other opportunities or a raise might be an option in the future.
I’ll look at other potential side jobs in the meantime.
Thanks for the tips and about tax, the casual work would be at minimum wage so not sure if it would be all worthwhile.

Don't over burden yourself. Get yourself better first before taking on more work.

I've had long covid since last year. I'm not doing any more than I can as it's not worth it in the long run. You will only burn out and make yourself more ill.

So, we live on a small holding. I'm out of the house about 6:30am and back home about 17:30-18:00 on weekdays with my regular full time employment. At the moment I do a couple of quick farm chores before work, let the birds out, top up food and water etc. Weekends are for improvements and upgrades to make us more efficient. At the moment we turn an actual profit of about £40/week on egg sales, spend way more than that on other areas. Got a few more potential ventures to start looking into, but looking at this as a medium term goal not short term. We've only been here a couple of years but potentially my wife can give up work or I can retire early. I'm 30 odd years away from that at the moment but can see the government having people work til death at this rate
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!
