Train leaves (very) early

I arrived at Euston this morning at 8 to find that the 8:30 had already left at 7:50 as it had been rescheduled. That meant I had to wait til 9:10 for the next train which also required me to make an additional change ,meaning I arrived well over an hour late. Should I be able to claim compensation? Would have been unrealistic for me to check tiem tables before I left the house as I wouldn't have had enough time to get to the station any earlier

Does that not depend on when it was rescheduled? Do you know when the change was made.

I would fill in the form for lateness compensation and only spend time working out the exact rules and entitlement if they say no.

Cut off time for timetable changes is 10pm the previous day.

Submit a claim, but don't be surprised if its a no if the services ran to time.
  • For a claim under the delay repay scheme - “The delay is calculated against either the normal timetable or an amended timetable that is published in advance.”

Any changes to timetables will be shown on
the Journey Planner and Live Departure Boards on National rail website. It’s always worth checking before setting off  to the station as it will also alert you to delays etc .

Nothing to lose by submitting a claim .However, I would expect the claim to be refused . Unless you are able to prove that there was no information about the rescheduling on journey planner . For example a screenshot from journey planner after 10pm the day before which is still showing the original time .

But the 10pm cutoff is ridiculous if you're catching an early morning train. Or even when you have to go to bed by 10pm.
Its a way for the train companies to fiddle the timetable
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?

A 'one off' reschedule or complete change to timetable going forward? Don't know if every train company the same but it's around October/November time that ours put a new timetable up.

Years ago a train left our village at 7.51am went into the city centre and stopped for around 10 mins then continued out to where I worked, just a few mins walk from that station. On days when I was required to start at 8.30am I could drop both kids off at the school breakfast club, catch the train and be at work on time. One day around this time of year I went to do just that and found the train didn't come until turned 8am I then discovered this was the new time and meant I could no longer get to work for 8.30 via train. Over a decade on and the train still runs at turned 8am and means I still can't get in for 8.30 in my current job!

JMO - but I think you'd have more success with a claim if it was just rescheduled that day for whatever reason rather than you're talking about a whole new timetable.
  • Where were you going? Realtimetrains doesn't show any trains scheduled for either 7:50 or 8:30
