Asda Price Increases To Pay For Just Essentials Range

Anyone else noticed the price of Asda standard own brand products have increased more than other supermarkets? Today I looked at oven chips £2.15, (£1.70 in August) I’ve been buying these for years, today I just said no and got them from Aldi for £1.25.

I’m convinced they’ve increased prices to cover the discounting on the Just Essentials range.

Can’t say I have noticed to be honest, I still find Asda cheaper by far than all of my local supermarkets.

I went to Aldi the other day with a friend who drove and we were both surprised how it’s not as cheap as people have been telling us. Half the shop was also like a jumble sale with random things that I can’t imagine a lot of people buying, like dog towels, sanders, crepe makers 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • The only way to make Just Essentials cheap and profitable is for them to sell a lot of volume (i.e. the Aldi/Lidl model).  If the standard own brand is only a bit more expensive, the majority of customers will go for that.  Hence they need to make it substantially more expensive in order to shift enough volume into the discount range.

I’ve tried a few of the Just Essentials range I found the corned beef very good the sliced white bread not so good and the frozen burgers absolutely awful.

The back bacon was very good, at £1.30 it was no different from the regular type at £1.70. But they stopped selling it, probably too popular.

Couple more I’ve remembered the Smart Price crumpets are ok if we’ll done and the spaghetti is ok but not 100% Durham wheat.

I don't think it's to pay for that economy range, I've noticed ASDA prices have gone up since the petrol station people bought it/Walmart sold.  I hardly shop there now and find Tesco cheaper, whereas until recently I was hardly in Tesco as ASDA was always cheaper.  I have to say I don't think I would change back, my ASDA has 1 till on after 6 and almost force you to use the fast lane, Tesco seem to have 4 or so tills open on an evening.
