Is the maximum not £240 per month?
Yes, I was about to say the same. If the OP has no earnings, then they can pay in a maximum of only £240 per month (£2,880 per year) into a pension. That amount gets £720 tax relief from the government, taking it up to a gross annual contribution of £3,600.
......and it's been at that level since 2006.
Had it been adjusted for inflation, then by this tax year it would be somewhere between £5400 and £6400, depending on which measure of inflation you used.........
Had it been linked to the rises in Personal allowance, it would be around £8988 this tax year...
