Checking State Pension Forecast

  • @Beddie - thank you, that’s what I needed to hear. Yes, my DB pensions will provide considerably more than £38 per week!

@xylophone thank you for the fuller explanation.  I retired part way through 2021, and 2021-22 counts as a full year.  So I think that means I had 33 years up to 2016 and 6 since. Enough, anyway!
  • Now I suppose I should encourage my husband to check his.  He finished work a few months before me hence did not make any contributions for 2021-22 whereas I did - but he is a few years older so will have paid more years than me, I’m sure.

He could even have more if his "starting amount" was more than the NSP at 2016, as he will have that extra amount preserved. It would depend if he was also contracted out for many years, so had a large "COPE" when the calculation was done, and on other factors too - very important to check the actual amount, as if he is short, he may be able to pay voluntary contributions to make up, which is well worth doing.
  • @LHW99 I will get him to check. I have a vague recollection that when we both checked some years ago he had more SSP than I did, because he wasn’t contracted out in the early stages of his career, whereas I was. But if I’ve contributed 39 years, he must have contributed 43, so I doubt he will be short.

    Check, don't assume.

I needed 48 years (44 years from working, 4 years from paying voluntary Class 3s) in order to qualify for the full nsp.

because he wasn’t contracted out in the early stages of his career,

If he was ever contracted out  from SERPS or S2P  he will have a COPE.
