How do I know I've got the Marriage allowance

Hi all

My wife does not earn her full taxable allowance and so has completed the form online to transfer part of her allowance to me, according to googling I should see an M after my tax code, which I never have, and I have never seen mention of it on any of my notice of codings which I get regularly. When we look online at my wife's tax account all it says is "Applied for Marriage Allowance retrospectively" for the tax years since 2015-16 to date. Any ideas anyone?

You can't have an M tax code retrospectively, you would get a tax calculation and refund direct from HMRC for previous tax years.

Did she apply for the current tax year as well?

What is the tax code on your latest payslip?

She has just applied for the current year, although we thought it carried on automatically unless our circumstances change, which they haven't. Current tax code 1263L ( I get £60 a year uniform washing allowance)

I'd leave it a few days then check your Personal Tax Account and I'd expect you will see the new tax code for 2022:23.

Your employer will pay any refund due for the current tax year the first time you are paid under the new code.

Tax code is likely to be 1389M.
