FiT and smart meter

I’m trying to make sure I’m not doing something daft by switching to a smart meter. I have done some research and asked my FiT provider but they haven’t responded and when I call them I get promised a call back which never arrives (great service). My question is, will my export remain being calculated as deemed export or will it switch to metered. Switching to metered seems logical with a smart meter that can presumably calculate that, but a battery installer I spoke said that I will remain on deemed export even with a smart meter.
Also I am getting an electric car so the percentage of energy I consume of my production will increase. My panels were installed in 2015. I’m tempted to get a smart meter because I don’t think the export difference (if there is one) will be too significant and I will be able to access tariffs that might be more suitable.

The wording of the FIT scheme says that if you've got an export meter, the FIT supplier should use it instead of deemed export. (Some people, even on this forum. will argue violently that this isn't true but it is and you can check it in your supplier's T&C.)However - none of the FIT suppliers seem very interested in this. When I had my smart meter fitted I told my FIT supplier (nPower / EON) and they replied telling me they wouldn't switch me to metered export unless I actively asked them to. I was happy on deemed export so I let the matter lie.Switching to metered export would probably be more lucrative for me (I'm on an early FIT and the deemed export tariff is much lower than the export rates I could currently get from Octopus, and now I know how much I'm exporting I can do the sums) and I might yet make the change.N. I am on fit and just got a smart meter my energy supplier is still using the generation meter for my exports.ie half of what I produce. I am monitoring my exports to see if will be in my advantage to change but as i have maximised self consumption i doubt it.2

I believe a smart meter doesn't technically count as an export meter until it has a registered MPAN for the export register. My export is recorded on the meter itself but isn't being read by the DCC so I don't see how they could force me to give up my deemed exports as it stands. However, I too would currently be better off with metered exports.2
