Mumzy- good luck, you're doing well already :D I'm an ex smoker so I can sympathise to some extent. The savings account idea is a good one, then you can see how much you have saved by giving up. It is worth it, as well as the money savings, I feel much better now health-wise.

MUMZY well done for giving up the smoking. Keep telling yourself you can do it.
My youngest daughter gave up two years ago and thought she would use the money to learn to drive and she did for a while but her hubby had problems at work and they were living on very little money so the lessons had to go. But then she enrolled in a fitness instructors course at the local college and completes it this june. She loves the course and has been offered a full time job at the local gym when she qualifies.
So make a goal to aim for and even if you don't achieve that first one another opportunity(spelling?) may come along that you hadn't thought of.

Does anyone here can/bottle food? I am interested in learning to do this with a pressure canner and have joined a yahoo group but it is mainly Americans .
Also i can not find a pressure canner here for sale so am looking into having one sent by mail or something but its not cheap to start with so would like ideas if anyone has any. I find it sad that this kind of thing has almost died out here.

I have tried making jam, which was then put into jars. But I've never tried canning. Maybe the OS board would have some people interested in that? As long as you keep things fairly sterile, putting things in jars is not too tricky. If I can manage it, I consider it idiot proof :p The things we did had a shelf life of up to a year.

I'm about to have a moan though... I bought a laptop in December 2006, its a HP Pavilion Entertainment one, and its already starting to break. It keeps crashing, shutting down for no reason, the screen keeps going all dodgy, and I've already had it looked at once.
Irrespective of the fact that it's presumably out of warranty, 15 months isn't a reasonable life for a laptop and you would win a legal case to get this laptop repaired/replaced. I would suggest contacting the supplier (the retailer, not HP) and asking them to sort it out on the basis that it has been defective since originally supplied. The fact you had it repaired - presumably under warranty - supports the case that it was always defective.

I nearly did the same, but have a horrible flu kind of thing. I just love St Andrews on fresh days :)

I am one happy bunny :D:D

March has been a five week month for pay and I was therefore expecting a higher total than previous months. I also paid £100 on a holiday deposit - which I am counting for the challenge as I want this to be a real reflection of what I spend.

    I only spent £232.01 :T :T :T

Can't believe it. Triple checked too :A

Been doing an os store cupboard cahllenge which has helped a lot.

A big YAY!! Thanks everyone who is involved in the challenge and a special thanks to NYKMEDIA . :)

When I started the challenge I didn't think I could do £4000 (although it should be more for me anyway as I have one child). Yet a quarter of the way through I am bang on target and under target if you count the one child). Even adding in the full payment I need to make on my holiday next month I am hoping I might get a lower end amount than I hoped for.

At the end of the year I shall add on the diesounted costs, which for me are:

Council tax £115 per month (10 months)
    My commute (£100)
    Daughter's communte (£70)
    Union (£10.95)

    So really extra : £276

Doing my maths this means that so far I live on total per month - no exclusions :
    £620:D :D:D:D:D:D

When I started using mse I lived on £1200 a month.

    A Huge :T :T :T for mse and all who post :)

I can't thank you guys enough.
