Too much tax paid?

I have been taking a pension from an employer since 2008. Recently, they sent a letter saying that I have been getting the wrong amount and was due nearly £12,000 and more per month. It has arrived in my account, but £2,500 tax has been taken. If the correct pension had been paid monthly, no tax would have been paid from 2008 to 2020 when I started to get the oap which took me over the tax threshold. Am I entitled to challenge this tax paid? It does seem a bit rough to pay tax now when I wouldn`t in normal circumstances.
Thanks for any answers/advice.

No to the tax, though the company should pay you that amount

Not with the pension payer no.

But you can ask HMRC to treat the income as taxable in the tax year it relates to.

OP means £12,000 for arrears, and an amount which is more than the current pension per month.

Thanks for the replies. I called the IR and I have to get the pension company to show how much of the arrears relates to tax years from 2008 to now. I have written to them asking for this. I didn`t go above the tax threshold until I reached pensionable age in 2020.

I hope that Tadley realised that and was being humorous!
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

So do I, but it wasn't 100% clear.
