Charities and Gift Aid?

When I was employed and donated to charities, I've in most cases declared gift aid where possible.

If I'm no longer paying taxes, but continue to support charities and complete a tax return for savings etc, does it just mean that I'll need to pay HMRC more tax to cover the amount extra charities will have claimed?

You can also tell the charities you donate to that you no longer pay tax and so they should no longer claim Gift Aid on your donations.

It  should not be necessary to fill in a tax return just for savings interest, unless the interest is above £10K.

In any case if you have no taxable income, you can earn up to £18750 in interest, without paying tax on them. If you have a small taxable income (but not enough to actually pay tax) then subtract that income from £18750, and that is how much interest you can earn without paying tax.
  • Thanks all.

@Albermarle - I've been completing a tax return for some time now, but I thought HMRC would contact me in due course to advise me that I no longer need to complete a return?  My only other income would have been from employment up until a few years ago.

Yes you would have thought that.
