Free Calculation??

  • I had a similar problem trying to get an estimate with my NHS pension. Because of some protected pay, the TRS was not correct. Eventually had to complain and then it was generated but with no breakdown of the calculations. I estimated it as best I could and it compared well to their estimate and I thought that was good enough at the moment

I asked what my pension would be if I retired in January 2023. They said they couldn't tell me. I think they mean to fill out the form and hand in my notice to retire. But I can't really do that unless I know what the figures will be. I'm based in Scotland.
That's nonsense. Nobody is going to retire early without some projected figures. Have you written and asked them for projected figures (sounds as if it might just have been a telephone call?), because if not, that might be your next action. If the exchange was in writing, write again and ask them why they can't provide projections and how you are supposed to make a decision if you don't have possible figures.
I emailed them and got an email back. The SPPA website says they do not provide figures anymore. I think I'll try complaining, to see if that gets me anywhere. I could leave work completely and live off rental income + maybe a part time less stressful non nhs job income + leave pension untouched till age 60. The nhs is rife with bullying which I've let be water off a duck's back for 35 years but don't want to continue. If the xuggers would just tell me what the pension would be in Jan 2023, it would make the decision much easier.

Are you in a union? As I noted the teachers union rep got a figure for us, for retirement 31 Dec 2022 on what they call "Actuarially Reduced Pension (ARP)".  In that scenario contributions to the scheme stop at retirement, and pension starts to be paid immediately after.

Yes we do! I retired without proper figures, just some old ones and my calculations - I was eyewatering close to LTA, had deferred and had combined officer / practitioner - even when I took it they recalculated 18 months later (and added a bit more)
They really just expect you to use online calculators (which don't allow for anything other than bog standard officer pay) and to just apply and see what you get
