But if A arrives to be ready to work on time why would they want him to leave or make an example of them?  Surely the answer is to be on time?

Unless they are potentially being singled out because of a protected characteristic - race, gender, etc. - then an employer by and large can enforce the rules how they like.

Without knowing the circumstances, there could be mitigating factors. Maybe person B is a high performer and so a blind eye is turned. Maybe C has childcare constraints that the manager is aware of. Maybe something else, maybe not

Even if it's just favouritism, that may be indicative of a bad employer (or at least a bad manager), but that's about it.

We (everyone) seem to be skipping around the point I made when they're on time but still get called out for being late. Even when they're not.

Says to me that they (the company) want to make an example of them, want them to leave. Why else go at someone for something that just completely isn't true?

Again, focusing totally on the times when they get called out for being late when they're not.

As though the employer sits there with their eyes shut until 8:05, opens them, sees person A & then has a pop at them for being late because they weren't seen before 8:05.

Being late I totally get, even if it's 8:01. I totally get that. An employer is quite right to talk to someone about that. But if you're due to start at 8:00 and you're ready for 8:00 or earlier then to me, what's the problem?!

What time do they all leave? If A is out the door at hometime, and the others are more flexible, then this could also be part of the issue?

    Same time.
All carry out the same duties.
Nobody does anything that someone else doesn't do. Everyone does the same.

My personal opinion - I think the company either want A to leave or they just want to make an example of A. They can't be bothered to deal with B & C. Their faces fit better.

That, unfortunately, is a very likely scenario.  B & C are 'more difficult' do deal with and there is a gutless manager who will try all methods apart from facing these individuals down.

I'm afraid this actually comes from above the line manager. It is almost certain that they have been instructed to operate like this from either the very top or one step down from the very top.

This sort of 'second hand question' doesn't work, as this thread demonstrates. Suggest your friend gives ACAS's helpline a call on Monday, so they can talk it through 'first hand'.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

Well they would've been able to ask first hand.

But it appears I'm censored from saying much more than that unfortunately.

    But they didn't.
