Resigning on a Friday - notice period?

Hi,
I'm confused with dates!
I have to give a calendar month's notice, and I work Monday to Friday.
If I hand my notice in on a Friday, does it become effective on the next day (Saturday) or the next working day (Monday)?

    so my understanding is that if you resigned today, then your notice would be 29/10-28/11 which is a Monday. So you could start you new job on Tuesday 29/11.

    anything else is by negotiation.
    Your employer may prefer to pay you for holidays or may prefer you to take your holidays.

  • It becomes effective from the date you say in your resignation letter.  But you might be overthinking this.  No one is going to quibble over a day or so.

    You would possibly write something like: 

    "I submit my resignation, with immediate effect.  I will of course work my agreed notice period of one calendar month and my last day will be XX of XXX"

    If they disagree with what actual date is your last day, that's a discussion to be had at that point but, if someone in my team resigned today for example, I wouldn't quibble over their last day being Friday 25th rather than Monday 28th because that is just daft.

    Which, in itself is ambiguous as that could be 28, 30 or 31 days (or even 29 once ever four years)!

    October has 31 days but November only has 30, so as your notice period is partly in each month which applies!

    All you can do is ask them and only argue if the answer causes you a real problem.

    I had already looked at the CAB website you linked to, but was unsure about the day v. working day part - so thank you for confirming that.
    Re annual leave, I expect to be paid for outstanding annual leave due to the nature of my role (but I'd be happy if they decided to make me take it as part of my notice period.

    Having just re read my contract - it states "a month's notice" - I'll go with the dates as Lisyloo stated & will see what happens...

    When do you want the employment to end?

    If you dont care acknowledge its a months notice and agree your last working day after submission. If you would rather finish on the Friday 25th then suggest that in your letter. If you'd rather only give 2 weeks notice I'd personally be speaking to my manager before submitting the letter.

    That would normally be until the same date in the next month, although I don't think there is a hard and fast definition of that.

    The number of working days can vary significantly depending on when the weekends fall.

    I've normally sent the letter ASAP (to start the clock ticking) and then agreed leaving date afterwards as it's by agreement.
    They'd be a bit pedantic to make you work a Monday unless they are really hard pushed, but you'd know the situation better than us.
  • At one time I had a notice period of a complete calendar month which was defined in such a way that notice had to include the 1st to 28th/29th/30th/31st, depending on the month.
