Free Rogue Dialler Protection for Internet Users

Apologies if this has been posted before, but it is good (and free) protection to get on your PC.

This software is free from BT, so is legit. Just heard of someone who got hit with a £500 telephone bill because of one of these. Get this as it will warn you before you get 'dupped'.

Modem problems can occur when you download (sometimes unwittingly) software known as a 'dialler' that alters the number your computer uses to connect to the Internet. These diallers connect to the internet via a premium-rate (090) or international (00) telephone number rather than the number supplied by your ISP.

By monitoring dial-up connections [this BT] software will alert you anytime your computer attempts to dial a premium rate, international or non-approved number. The software is for information purposes only, it will alert you to the fact you are dialling a premium rate number, it will not stop the call, it is your responsibility to cease the call if necessary by disconnecting. If in any doubt you should unplug your modem and check your settings before attempting to redial.

Is this any good for broadband users or is it for mainly analogue dial up connection
All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.

It's not needed for broadband. it is only a potential problem for dial-up connections so extra security is advisable. :)
  • It doesn't apply to broadband users, as their connection is 'always on'.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Rogue diallers can't attack Broadband users as their connection doesn't dial any number.

This is purely for users who dial-up, e.g. those who connect to the Internet via a modem.
  • If you have broadband make sure you have unplugged your old dial up modem from your phone line or you could still be a victim!

Re your normal BT telephone line (not sure if it will work with modem:-

ring Bt and ask them to barr all 0900 numbers on your telephone its free to do

    *BUT NOTE*
You will not be able to enter comps or vote lines as most are 0900

Ive had 0900 barred on my phone for nearly a year, stops kids entering comps etc (my service provider is one-tel )
Thanks to everyone who posts comps :T
