It must have been so hard back in the day if you had hearing problems. Modern technology is a wonderful thing.

Yes, the audiologist said to me that I must have been lip reading a while and not realised it. Thinking back I do recall going to the dentist one day and not understanding what he was saying as he was wearing a mask.
i do wonder if TV is dependent on how good your TV set is. I find BBC really bad, and that is without any aids yet....lol.  They seem to put a lot of music over things, same as US stuff and soon as the music starts, I struggle even more with the voices. but audiologist says aids will make the speech stand out more from the background noise.  I find CH 4 always so quiet and anything we have recorded or DH has downloaded, I am stuffed before it starts....lol.   Watched something the other night and was 2 girls from NI, they talked so quickly as well, and  there was no chance I had any clue what was going on.....lol.

Can  I just ask, what make of aids do you have? @badmemory

Believe it or not I had never thought to look!  They are Phonak.  I accompanied a friend to court a few weeks ago.  It had one of those security arches that you have to walk through.  I had to answer questions too.  I had absolutely no idea what he said, My friend had to repeat each question.  As soon as we got in the waiting room proper my hearing returned.  I must say that the security person did not seem the least bit surprised at the problem.
Put it another way, hearing aids are not as yet the final solution.

Mmm, it does seem that they don't solve everything.  Did they talk to you about the increased risk of dementia if you don't have them?

I was told many (over 30) years ago that the only real cure for my hearing would be an operation (starting with my worst ear) to do a skin graft to replace the damage.  The risk being that I could be left with no hearing at all in that ear.  My then doctor did not advise it until my hearing had virtually gone anyway.
Bearing in mind it is around 70 years since I could hear properly it is amazing what I can now hear.  Tissues were not really around back then.  I mean who knew they russled.  Now I can hear them even without the aids in.  My ears feel inundated at times.

Yes I can imagine. I like quiet TBH, not a fan of loud noises

DH just been in the attic & found 4 empty boxes he was storing....why I don't know. But its increased my decluttering total. None of them were any good for keeping to reuse. One had been up there nearly 7 years as it still had a receipt attached!

My hearing has not been great since I was a child, I lipread with most of the time so I can hear what people are saying. Whenever we watch the television I have to have the subtitles on, I have needed them for over 7 years and some programs are so quiet.

I keep thinking of getting my hearing tested and I think I'm highly likely to need hearing aids, I am following progress with keen interest.

Do check with your doctor first.  All they will do is look at your ears & check for wax basically & if they are clear refer you.  I went to my local specsavers & they were free, but I believe they are not unless you are referred.  Mine are great for watching TV, although I have always found BBC best then ITV & then channel 5.  Most things american are dreadful there is so much mush.
