Help reporting CGT via Gateway

Im using an accountant to  work out  and send off my CGT  . He sent me a link to create  a CGT Gateway and password,  and using those to create a ref no. for him to use as an agent  .Did that and sent him the reference .

He replied I also needed to open an account by going back to link , imput  my GWay  and pw. and click green tab 'CREATE ACCOUNT'  and send him the reference for the account  so he could log in with his agent ref .

So, I went back to the original link  , picked the  'for property sold after April ' option,    and proceeded as asked, to  log in with my Gateway and pw .  . There wasn't any green create button to press , so I pressed continue  , and this is what came up .

"Use your agent services account to access  this service.  You'll  need to sign in  using your agent services account user ID and pw.  If you do not have one , youll need to create an agents services account . Do not use sign in details  for an HMRC online services for agents account .   TRY AGAIN"  Tried 3 times and got same thing.

I dont understand  where Im at for this .  It would seem Im  in an area only for agents,  but  even going back to the  original HMRC  link  and starting again  on this page, the same thing happens.
Report and pay your Capital Gains Tax: What you need to do - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Can anyone suggest where Im going wrong  please , the accountant referred me  to  the online help . I have written but it takes 2 days  and I havent been able to  get through on the tel line.

  • I don’t wish to be flippant but I would be engaging the services of another accountant- sounds anything but helpful!

Am I right in thinking I need  a separate and new Gateway  number specifically for reporting  CGT? ( ie not the one I use for normal tax return?)  (like I had to create a separate one for registering a trust ?)

The thing is that the new online CGT registration/reporting system is a nightmare.  As usual, HMRC regard accountants/agents as an unnecessary after thought, so accountants can't register on behalf of the client.  Hence the accountant sending the client a link to set it up themselves.  There's no other way!  I don't know if it's the client themselves fouling it up, or the HMRC system, but I'm about 50:50 with my clients - some come straight back to me with the code I need, yet others really struggle and end up having to phone HMRC to sort it out, some taking a few weeks to get me the code.  I'm not the HMRC help desk, so there's nothing I can do when a client comes back to me saying they can't do it - I can't see their screen, I don't have access to a log showing what they've clicked on nor entered.  That's the HMRC helpdesk job to sort out.

P ennywise  , thank you , that made me feel a bit better !   Are you abe to  confirm whether I require  another  Gateway account for  CGT?   I already have a general one for my own ordinary tax return , one for being admin of  2 grandchildrens trusts, and then created one for each of those trusts for them ,  so it wouldnt surprise me if I now need one to report my  CGT , but having created it and the fact its going wrong , has made me wonder if I should be using my original ordinary one?
