Hi
I am looking to replace old vcr
I am baffled with all the different machines and formats out there
We have a tv with built in freeview
I require a machine that can record freeview onto the hard drive, It must allow me to watch one channel while recording the other
It doesnt matter if it is a dvd recorder as well...
Please can someone out there with the knowledge to point me in the right direction want to buy it this week up to approx £150 but the cheaper the better

You need to make sure that the DVD / Hard Drive player has freeview built in - otherwise you can only watch/record the same channel.
The hard drive recorders do not have a problem with diferent formats - just budget!
DVD now has three formats - unless you are really into it I would sugest plain DVD. Blueray and HDDVD are better but more expensive but could you tell the difference - or do you care! I have a Panasonic DVD recorder with freeview and it works very well. My concern about hard drive recorders is that hard drives fail a bit too often for my liking (I've "lost" 3 and had a further 2 on their way out in computers in the last few years)."The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him no good."(Samuel Johnson 1709-1784)

There's a lot of newer cheap devices on the market, but if you want something easy to use that's stable and well-tested (been out nearly 2 years I think) you'd go little wrong with a Humax 9200T PVR.
Most people who have them rave about them (including my parents.. in their 70s). Reliable, easy to use etc. (still think sky does it better though!). I think around 150 still though.
If you only want to record 1 prog at a time, and can use your TV freeview tuner to watch a 2nd channel whilst recording, the wharfedale DVDRHD400F is interesting (freeview, dvd recorder, 80Gb drive), but I'm using it as a "backup" to sky+.
If I was going for one device it would still be the humax. What goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots0
