MSE Poll: Have you turned on your heating yet?

Options
Poll started 4 October 2022

Energy bills have soared but it's that time of year again when it starts to get much colder and so we want to know if you've turned on your heating yet or have decided to hold out for a little longer because of spiraling costs?

I never actually turn my heating off.  I have a thermostat that decides when it's cold enough for the heating to come on.  It's decided to turn the heating on for a few mornings so far.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Can't vote as my reply would be "no, it's not cold enough yet".

Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

No, I will wait as long as I can before turning on - but not because of costs

Yes, but only when needed and at18 degrees, instead of the previous 20.

An hour in the morning and from 7 to 8.30 at night. We tried doing with out, but the house was very cold. It's well-insulated, but has to be heated to retain heat.

Turned on for a couple of days in September. Now off again. Smart thermostat system could be left in charge, but there is no point having the heating fire up for ten minutes in the morning just because the thermostat wants 0.1C higher temperature.

I look at the forecast each day and determine whether it's worth putting the heating on or braving it out for an hour or two until the house warms naturally.
  • Mine is never off, I just leave the thermostat to do its job.

I am retired so like to be comfortable but I do override the set temperature when I go out for more than a couple of hours.
  • Ridiculous survey because the 1st question does not cover all possibilities - in particular, that mentioned by others, that we have not put the heating on yet due to the mild weather.

I thought it such an old idea that you put your heating on and off.  I have thermostats and they do the job for me.

Yes, I've turned it on, but only for an hour a day to warm up the bathroom before I shower.

I won't be running it in the evening, relying on jumpers and thick socks.
if i had known then what i know now
  • I have not put my heating on yet because it is still 17 degrees outside. I've only just started wearing a jacket to go out.
