coinstar = daylight robbery

Hi all
Just a word of warning and an opinion or two. I used the coinstar machine in our local Asda today with £12.95 worth of 5p's, 2p's and 1p's - it was counted prior to going because we were going to bank it then decided the machine would be easier. It kicked out £3 in 5p's and 19p in 2s and 1ps - the receipt was for ........... £5.26 - how can that be. Works out we were diddled out of £3.98 ish even after their 7.9p for every £1. Can't prove it so no come back on Coinstar :mad: !!

Now how many people chuck in loads of change without a clue how much they have and loose almost half. Must be a nice little earner for coinstar too I bet they're making a mint.

Would love watchdog or similar to do a survey and see just how much and how often they are milking.

  • I love these machines! We use the one in Sainsburys but we use them coz we can't be bothered to count the money. We would have no idea whether we were being ripped off or not. Thanks for the warning!

  • I always use the self service counter instead. Whack all your change in the coin slot (this is best done when shopping during a quiet time) and pay the rest off with your debit card or notes. I save no end doing it that way :)

    My HSBC has recently installed a coin paying in machine. I roughly know how much I am paying in and it seems pretty accurate to me. It goes straight into my account.

    Like the idea of paying into the self service machine though....

    The coin paying in machines that HSBC do (in the bank lobby usually) are supposed to be (I only say that because I've never tried them, not because I'm doubting it) completely accurate, so you should be okay with those.

    I've never used the CoinStar ones because I'm too cheap to give away 7.9%! :rotfl:

    I love the idea of using the self service checkouts too - never thought of that. :T

    I use the HSBC one too, just stick it all on flat, (bit of a pain but not too bad) and then in it goes :)
