We use different supermarkets for niche items but Lidl and Aldi for most items.
Niche items for example M&S for their excellent block of mature cheddar for £5 a pack, which is about £6.50 a kilo - price is good and the cheddar is the best i've had (followed by Sainsburys version). Aldi cheese is not that much different in price per kilo; try M&S's...

I seldom buy cheese, but did yesterday purchase some Specially Selected smouldering ember oak fired red Leicester, and was pleasantly surprised at just how good it was. So much so that I bought some more today just in case it disappears!

I have to recommend the vintage cheddar in the black packaging in Aldi, its sublime, it is a little more expensive but very good value.

ETA just took a look, its actually Barbers Extra Mature (its not harsh but creamy)

I'm pleased to hear that m+s's cheese and the black aldi cheese are good, I've 3 of each in my fridge :) Currently eating a big purple lidl block, they've changed it slightly I think but it's still good.

I keep a good stash of cheese (we get through it at a shocking rate). I try to work it so by the time I get to a pack it's around a month out of date cos that gives the white salts (?) chance to form on the outside - really improves the flavour.
Right, and what are you going to do about it?

I like the Lidl purple one as well.  Big cheese eater here too, my favourite is Davidstow cheddar from Waitrose but I only buy that on offer (on offer its £4 for 550g, although looks like full price has increased by 50p!))

I buy a 900g block of mild cheddar in Lidl about once every fortnight. The last block I bought was in the fridge unopened for just over a week and it went mouldy. I cut the mould off but every few days it started showing signs of getting mould, this is the first time Lidl's cheese has done that since the store opened in November 2018 it was still in the wrapper and the date on it was late  November 2022.
I would have returned it if it was mouldy before opening as that sounds like there was a hole in the packaging.

I took a chance again this week and the cheese seems to be a bit saltier and less tasty. But its still sharp and got the waxy texture I like, so goes well with salad items.

This may be a bit of a niche one, but here goes.  I've always loved the Aldi Everyday Essentials mature Cheddar - great value, and taste-wise it beats most other Cheddars hands-down.  Just recently it seems to have gone right off the boil - it's now got a rubbery rather than crumbly texture, and the taste is nowhere near as full-flavoured as it was, it's distinctly bland.  Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed this?
Try Tesco Creamfields brand mature Cheddar - price matched with Aldi, but equally sharp, full-flavoured and far more crumbly. I'm not keen on the crumble factor but its not up there with Cheshire so I can work with it.
