Hi, I've just had an email from Nuffield Health saying they are closing their Spa pools for winter, to save on energy costs. They dont appear to be offering any membership discounts either.

However this seems a breach of their T&Cs -

– 11.3.9 If we significantly reduce the opening hours or facilities at your home centre, unless this is temporary, and we need to do so for (i) health and safety reasons (ii) for maintenance or (iii) for improvements that will benefit a majority of members – in any such case we will offer other facilities within your centre or at another centre.

 - 14.4 When we make changes that may affect you, we will give you notice of the changes we plan to make by displaying the changes in your home centre for one full calendar month. If you are not happy with the changes, you can cancel as explained in section 11 of these terms and conditions.

However I am aware this is a first world problem. but at £62/month they aren't cheap. There is no other pool/spa/gym setup near me, hence I am a member. There are of course several cheaper gyms.

Thanks, Dan

Interested to see how this pans out - I'm sure it'll be the first of many such situations.

Maybe suggest they move Spin classes down to poolside and power the Spa that way ;)
  • Update - they are posting on twitter members can freeze or cancel their membership.

Slightly ironic use of the word 'freeze' there  :cold_sweat:

I wonder whether NH were unduly hit by COVID - they were fair in reimbursing memberships for the closed / reduced periods but I think also lost a lot of members through the process.  The model for gyms is to get new members on monthly who never actually attend but forget the direct debit.  By being contacted, I think a lot of those members then remembered they were members and cancelled.

I've noticed at our gym they have stopped giving us towels and health MOTs (both because of COVID) and the standard of maintenance has dropped.  Air con has been faulty for a long time now and the gym equipment not being maintained either - the "fine tuning" of load on the resistance machines is broken so increments are add 10kg steps.

No help to the OP, but maybe an understanding of the situation.
