ADVICE NEEDED ON A DEBT NOT PAID FOR 3 YEARS

I would like some advice on a debt (old credit card debt that defaulted in 2011) that was passed onto a collection agency a few years ago.
I have not made a payment for 3 years after having a letter from them to say that the debt could not be enforced, therefore I was hoping after 6 years (3 more to go) it would be statue barred.
My problem is that the debt has been sold on and if I make contact with them via a letter, that wipes out the 3 years I have done already?
Can this new collection agency enforce the debt?
Has anyone been in the same situation?  Can anyone give any advice?
Thank you
