The whole broker involvement confuses me. They don't have access to all open market rates, yet they have better exclusive deals for some lenders. I guess you kind of have to use both. See what they can get you, then use a comparison site, or the other way around.
our broker was great. we were buying the house we were already living in and were both first time buyers who had come into an inheritance so were a bit lost with it all. he was definitely worth his fees for advice and the application then not just the rate he could get us.

when our initial deal was due to end jan next year but a few months ago i was nervous about what was happening to interest rates so we went back to him. he went through what he could access but also looked at the open market and in the end advised us we would be better applying directly with our lender for a rate switch. he told us what to ask for and even talked me through some stupid questions about early redemptions. he only charged us the advice fee (less than 100 quid if i remember right) and we've put in our calendar to contact him again in 5 years when this new term is coming to an end.

but your milage may vary because its about how confident you are to do things yourself and if the service/reasurance is worth it to you. and i guess if you find a good broker!

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?
