We would love a logburner again, but the back end of our 28ft long sitting room, where husband works from home, is narrower than the front end. There's not room for a logburner with all the safety rules complied with, and his big L shaped desk. There's a fireplace though and we burn logs bought 2 years ago.
My husband says that if fuel prices drop, he might consider getting a secondhand generator and putting it in a soundproof cabinet, with exhaust, but that seems risky to me, as who knows what fuel prces will do.
Unfortunately, our house is situated in the wrong direction for solar panels.
Re: wood, if you can get a bulk load locally, try to avoid chestnut for an open fire as it spits like crazy. Pine is really resinous, as well. It might be possible to get offcuts from a furniture maker, for example. As long as it's not treated, it should be good.
If you have an open fire or logburner, please do get a carbon dioxide detector.
