Remortgage process and old lender charges

Hello,
We're finally approaching our remortgage to a different lender.
The fix deal expires this month so we can move to a different lender without paying ERC from 1st of October.
On the redemption statement, the current lender charges us the monthly fee again on the 1st of October plus the interest for the previous month.
I spoke to them and they say we pay a month later for the mortgage therefore the last payment taken on 1st of October will be for September. Even if this is true, they charge us twice the interest owe to them. Is already included in the monthly payment but is also quoted separately in in redemption statement?!
I thought the mortgage payments and interest are normally charged and paid in advance?!
Thanks

Old building societies work one way and banks the other. I can’t recall the way round but you aren’t being charged twice.1

I understand the payment for the previous month and I'm OK with their explanation.
To charge me separately for the interest just doesn't look right.
