Indefinite Leave to Remain - Voluntary National Insurance Contributions

Can anyone give any advice ,  asking on behalf of my neighbour who has been going around in circles to find an answer.

He wants to pay voluntary NI contributions for his 45 year old wife who has Indefinite leave to Remain in the UK , he works full time while his wife does not - neither claim (or have ) any benefits.

Is it possible to pay on her behalf and will it be worth it at her age as she has not paid any previously , she has been the country 10 years and have a child together .

Any help would be appreciated

As they have a child she could get ni credits.

    Parents and foster carers

Your situation on or after 6 April 2010How to get credits
You’re a parent registered for Child Benefit for a child under 12 (even if you do not receive it)You get Class 3 credits automatically
You want to transfer credits from a spouse or partner who got Child Benefit for a child under 12Apply to transfer Class 3 credits between parents
It's just my opinion and not advice.

Not if they never claimed Child Benefit in the first place since homi mentioned they never claimed benefit.

Agree they need to have claimed or if child is under 12 start to claim. Hence the word "could"

I'm not sure why you wouldn't claim for child benefit even if you are over the 50k threshold as your circumstances could change during the financial year.

AIUI, it is worth paying for NI contributions regardless of whether they are voluntary  ones or not. She needs ten years contributions to get some state pension and every year thereafter is worthwhile (apart possibly from the last before maximum state pension, which may end up being a partial year)

Class 3 contributions can be paid on a weekly basis, so unless I'm missing something, whether it's a partial year or not makes no difference to the trade-off.
