Trying to find a solution to a break up debt

One of our neighbours had a new roof fitted last year for £6k. 1930s semi-detached. I know prices will have increased & you said it's a large house, but that is a LOT of money from which you won't benefit. Think you need to be tough.
F2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.
2) To read 50 books (12/50) 3) The Re-Shrinking of Foxgloves 8.1kg/30kg
Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!0 -
Yes. Frankly, I think the problem is that my ex just wrote the builders a blank chequefoxgloves said:One of our neighbours had a new roof fitted last year for £6k. 1930s semi-detached. Yup!Breaking up with someone you really cared for is absolutely devastating and incredibly hard but don’t screw up your future just because you want to be nice.
Oh, I'm past being nice...0 -
Thanks to everyone who responded, it was really helpful.
In the end, I found quite a simple solution to the problem.
My ex has limited income (one of the reasons she's my ex is because she decided she wanted to be free to find someone rich. I kid you not.) End result - in order to make ends meet, she needs to rent the house out. And - please don't think I'm being nasty, picking on a poor woman who lacks the means to support herself - she's still employing a cleaner and a dog walker.
So my offer was - if my name is on the mortgage leaving me liable for repairs, it also means I can claim 50% of the rent she's going to get. And a quick bit of maths demonstrated to her that if I did this, she'd end up owing ME money. At which point - she became more cooperative.
So - there's always a way, if you're prepared to use it.7
