You mentioned that most of what you're serving will be frozen. Please say that the frozen bits do not include Yorkshire Pudding? Please! The whole point about Yorkshire Pudding is that it's a batter pudding which precedes the main (meat) dish and it's cooked in a hot oven.

No, the Yorkshires will be homemade (and served with all the rest). The frozen ones are okay in an emergency but they're not a patch on the real ones. Normally I'd do the lot from scratch, but with a husband recovering from one op and finding out today that he's facing another, my time and energy are limited, sadly. Likewise, the spuds will be done from fresh (in beef dripping), but the other veg will probably be frozen just for ease of preparation.

Pigs in blankets are sausages wrapped in lean bacon. I don't normally serve them with lamb but my niece has requested them specially.

I don't pile plates high - I put food in serving dishes and let people help themselves.

I do hope your comment about doing a lot of things and doing them badly wasn't aimed at me.

pigs in blankets = sausages wrapped in bacon.

I will have overcooked turkey. Overcooked brussel sprouts and other veg (overcooked) and overcooked roast potatoes. (see a theme?) We will have turkey soup to start which is wonderful the best in the world and for pud will be Christmas Cake made last year.

We have Xmas round my moms and she cooks for 10 and she doesn't like help. The other year my sister brought a free range turkey crown which she wrapped in bacon. My mother cooked it for about 4 days and it turned to powder when it was cut.
My dad said it was processed and cheap my sister and BIL wanted to kill him:p as it was very very expensive.

Its not the food its the company that matters (well thats what I tell myself when I trying to eat the dinner)
But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more
  • ... turned to powder :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

If I were catering for 2 for the first time I'd keep it simple and do the following:
Turkey breast from a supermarket, sold in the foil trays; stuffing done separately; yorkshire puds; roast spuds, roast parsnips, brussels sprouts, mash, broccoli, carrots, peas, cauliflower; gravy.

You don't have to do a lot of each one, just a taste. You can cook the cauli/brussels/broccoli/carrots/peas in the same saucepan (just different timings so work out which goes in first/last). Roast spuds/parsnips can be cooked together. I'd get in some frozen yorkshires in the freezer in case mine turned out pants (I love yorkshire and dinner'd be ruined if I got that wrong) they only take 4 minutes so great to correct a last minute disaster.

I've never had starters for Xmas dinner ... and nobody has room for afters. So I'd not bother with those.

    Have a great day!
  • Sola i think your dinner sounds perfect.

Pretty much what im doing and there are just us two and dd aged 8.

Obviously I wont be cooking mounds of everything but we do like to taste it all.

And whats all this about the yorkshires of course they go with christmas dinner they are part of a roast dinner and christmas dinner is a big roast so why would anyone leave a major part out?

I wont be doing starters or pudding tho cos we wont fit it in.

OP instead of going tradition why dont you just cook your favourite meal?

We are having lamb - its our favourite for a roast - make fab gravy.

I don't think this thread really needs a cooking fundamentalist, margaret - it's very rude of you to criticise and get all hoity-toity. Not sure why you feel so threatened by all this. It may not be done the way it was in your youth but so what? You're not invited to our houses.
  • Mrs C, no turkey!!!

    Shocker.
