    In that case, I would recommend a Peavey Classic 30, it's more than £300 but a fantastic valve amp for the price:-

    For more versatility though, you can't go wrong with the Vox Valvetronix range, either the AD30VT(which I have) or the AD50VT. The Cubes recommended earlier in the thread are very good too.
  • fender blues junior, it's just over £300...classic sound, great for gigging - http://www.lifeismusic.co.uk/guitar/Fender-Blues-Junior-Guitar-Amp-1916.aspx

    Yes, Fender Blues Junior great for blues, perhaps Marshall DSL40 if more rock orientated. Depends what sort of music he plays and where, home use or gigging? Many shops will match internet prices with obvious advantage if anything goes wrong, or maybe if amp you choose needs to be changed for something more suitable! - most guitarists have very fixed ideas about what produces the best sound for them. Beware, market is awash with cheap, (usually transistor) amps, and you certainly get what you pay for! I would play safe and ask him which one he would like.
  • Hi,

    As others have said choosing an amplifier depends on what type of music and in what type of environment you want to play. So my advice would be to get in contact with a store that is geared up to talking to you about what you want to achieve. This can be a bit daunting and some organisations are better than others at dealing with this type of general enquiry.

    I've had to go through this process for my son and have found the following 2 stores to be very approachable and friendly towards the uninitiated;

    http://www.majelectronic.co.uk/ - specialising in classic/desirable equipment
    http://www.dv247.com/ - the Birmingham store has a guy called Nick Romluc who has a broad knowledge and is really good at 'no nonsense' sound advice.

    Hope this helps

    If he's into rock of almost any form (and blues too) then you simply have no choice but to buy a Marshall. I've got a MG30DFX which I believe I bought from http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/marshall-mg-30-dfx/323 some years ago. 30w is easily enough to blast most houses out + it's small enough to carry about and it's only £110ish!

    It doesn't quite have the classic Marshall tone of the old valve amps but then I don't have to replace the double glazing every time I crank it up like I did my old 100w Superlead :p

    I think Laney's LV (formerly TubeFusion) range are pretty good value for money. The LV200 should be enough to adequately play an 'unplugged' pub gig, but doesn't need to be cranked too much to get a decent tone. Very versatile too, from sweet jazzy tones, through to death metal! :-)
  • These Line 6 spider combos blow the small Marshalls out of the water. Loads of onboard effects and great for rock and are loud but portable.

    I have'nt priced them for you but here is 1 link..

  • try the fender blues jr 15watt amp - you can get them online for around 300quid or else. a good place to price check is thomann.de as they tend to have fairly low prices.

    fender blues is great for blues, jazz, 60s rock, and 70s rock, but can also adequately handle other stuff too.

    that said, as a guitarist, while I would of course appreciate any such gifts bought for me, I would prefer to be given my own choice - so I'd suggest you let im choose his own amp. what amp is good/best really is subjective, so what I love, he may not. I reckon you should make him a voucher he can 'open' on xmas day lettng him know that he can choose his own amp for 300 quid or less. plus, that means you can take advantage of the jan sales and get a better amp for your money!
