White vinegar?

  • Hi has anyone found where in a shop to buy white vinegar, it is different to distilled malt vinegar as it is much more acidic. I can only find it on eBay/amazon etc, wondering if any hardware stores (Wickes/B&M etc) sell it. I need a good gallon or so to de scale a water tank (I can’t use a rescaled solution before it’s suggested) cheers

I often find DriPak products, including vinegar, in random little corner shops with their cleaning things, and also independent 'pound shop' type places.

Could you use citric acid instead though? It'd be more cost effective and also more effective at descaling. https://www.dri-pak.co.uk/making-a-white-vinegar-substitute/ I find the boxes of that in hardware stores, Wilko etc.

Try homebargains or poundstretcher. I bought it in these places a few months back.

I don't think distilled malt vinegar is the same as white vinegar. Well it's different here anyway. Ordinary vinegar is the white vinegar - which is the one that you are probably after for cleaning etc.
Of course it's the same as white vinegar. That's what white vinegar is: distilled vinegar. Doesn't matter if its wine, cider or malt, once it's distilled, it's basically pure acetic acid albeit at a pretty high dilution of it, usually 5%.

White vinegar is 5% acetic acid, as is distilled malt vinegar. They are the same strength. There is such a thing called cleaning vinegar or double strength [white] vinegar which is 10% acetic acid, rather than the usual 5%.
Ufortunately, unlike the USA, it doesn't seem to be widely available here in the UK.

Probably being a bit thick here but went to buy some white vinegar as Tesco yesterday. All they had apart from ordinary vinegar was "distilled malt vinegar". Is this the same as white vinegar?

  • If you're after vinegar for household cleaning etc. you would likely be best off with the cheapest vinegar you can get your hands on... which will be acetic acid diluted to about 7-10% concentration in water. This is almost certain to the cheapest thing you will find with the word 'vinegar' on it. Not malt, not 'natural' or 'organic', just a dilute acid in water. It will be water-clear. Big-box outlets will be your best best, you'll probably find it most economically in gallon or litre+ containers.
