Forgot to tell the council I was moving out

A few months ago I sold a property and bought a new one. I cancelled my council tax direct debit but forgot to tell the council where I lived before. I've been paying council tax in my new place but now I have started wondering if I should have told the council I was moving out when I sold my property. Or is the new owner the one responsible to update the council? I'd appreciate any answers. TIA

You are responsible for informing the LA that you have vacated the property. If the new owner hasn't registered themselves, then you could be racking up arrears at your old address, which will result in a eventual liability order. So, contact the LA immediately.
You may be in debit or credit on the old account.
