PSA: check your receipts!

For the 6th consecutive weekly grocery shop at Morrisons I have found an item incorrectly priced on my recipt.
It was "only" a 50p on a £40 shop but the highest discrepancy I have found was for a total of £6. Again on an approx £40 shop.
I've had it drummed into me since childhood that it is vital to check receipts but I know that a lot of people (perhaps most) don't bother. A lot of people also spend more than £40 per week on their groceries. Over time, that can very quickly add up.
The worst incident was when I purchased a number of reduced items. They were correctly stickered (new, reduced barcode covering the old barcode) but amazingly still went through at full price. The most recent was when a bottle of olive oil was priced at £4.65 (no offer) but went through at £5.15.
I realise that this would have been human error, and that we all make mistakes, but with the cost of living increase that we are all facing this is a mistake that's a little hardee to swallow. I hate to think about the daily value of such discrepancies due to trusting shoppers and guarantee that Morrisons will not be the only culprit.
Please, please be aware of the cost of items you are buying and check your receipts.

Do you have any tips on how to remember every single price?
I shop almost exclusively online, but every time this is mentioned I wonder how people remember them all - especially at the moment where they're changing so quickly! It seems impossible to me.. Maybe on a top up basket, but a full family trolley-load just seems too much for my brain to store. Maybe I'm just getting old!0 -

Maybe this is the time that a hand held self scan device would help?
I don't know because I've never used one but I assume that when you scan the item you see the price on the device when you are standing by the shelves with the price ticket showing. Just a thought'
I don't have loads of items but I generally have a 'ball park' idea of prices. I also generally use the self service tills so when the item scans I can see the price.
I do try to check the receipt before I leave the shop- otherwise it could be a trail back from the car park up the hill (that used to happen often!) or worse- a 15 mile drive ......Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Generally, if you're being considerate with your purchases, you should have an idea of what you expect each item to cost.
For example, looking at olive oils, I was considering purchasing some Bertoli oil which was on offer for £6 but the Morrisons brand EVOO was £4.65 so I went with that.
When checking the receipt, it came through at £5.15 and, though I didn't remember the actual price, I knew that it wasn't that close to £6 so I went and checked.
Honestly, my memory isn't great; I just spend my money with consideration. I know a lot of people here do too but I also know that a lot of people trust their bills to be correct and don't have the patience to check receipts never mind then queuing up to resolve the issue. It can be absolutely worth it, though.0 -
Even checking your receipts every time is only going to work if you can remember all the prices on the shelves.1

Worst case I saw was at Lidl when a chap was purchasing a bag of frozen sprouts. Price should have been £1.49 and at the til it came up as £41.90. Personally I thought they were overpriced at £1.49.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Easy tip is to keep all your reduced items together on the conveyor, ideally at the end of your shopping, then when the items come along you can look on the till screen to see the price the item goes through at (eg Lidl and Aldi have a customer screen, Sainsburys and others have a 2 line screen which does the same.

This happens to me every single time I shop at Morrisons. I find them very expensive these days anyway, so go there only as a ‘last resort’, but whenever I see something priced ‘well’, I take a photo of it with the price in view before going to checkout.I know someone that used to work there on the checkouts, and totally unprompted they stated you should always check the receipts- so i assume this is very common.0
