I could open 1 to 3 SIPPS in my wife's name. Get the benefit of tax relief (she's a 20% tax payer) and take the cash when she's 57.
This seems a bit of a no brained for anyone with a public sector pension and the potential to save a bit more?
Are there any pitfalls that I am missing?
I will exceed LTA in next few years so can only do this in my wife's name.
Also add less than £10K ( including tax relief) in case the pot grows.
FYI , I added £7K to mine, then £1750 was added in tax relief.
Your wife will have to be earning at least £8750 from employment to be able to do this.1 -
Actually I think I've misunderstood.
I thought you could take "small pots" tax free - even if still working.
However having read about it today I understand its still 25% tax free and the remainder is taxed at marginal rate.
Therefore not quite the great deal I thought it was but still worth us exploring / understanding.
I guess if it was such a great offer everyone who could would do it.0
