British Gas - Coincidence I don't think so

Brief history - I was a customer of Peoples Energy whose account was transferred to British Gas.
My direct debit was set at £201.96 which was about £40 more than I needed to pay but as due to them not taking a couple of payments during the change over was not a problem.
By the end of May I was in a credit situation but still using more or less the same amount of energy.
Following the Governments announcement that house holds would get £400 to assist them due to the upcoming increases I received an email from British Gas advising my direct debits were reducing to £137.50 which wasn't enough to cover my energy needs.
Imaging my surprise when about a month later they announced that the £400 was going to be spread over a six month period at approx £66 per month - more or less the amount my direct debit had reduced.
Coincidence ??? has anyone else seen this.
By the way at the End of August I am £179 in debit
