    You don't pay inheritance tax at all, the estate of the deceased does.
  • IHT planning is not something that can be left till you are on your death bed. Apart from gifting part of their estate to charity there is nothing that can be done at this late state.

    Do you know for certain that their estate is big enough to be affected by IHT?

    What is the approx value of their estate?
    What is their marital status?
    Do they have children?
