i have a few western digital 'my books'.
They are fantastic, very quite, turn on and off with your computer, laptop, they look good too.
    500gb is approx £79 (have3)
and the 1TB are approx £169ish (have one)

I would avoid maxtor external hard drives, they are very noisy, you have to turn them on and off manually and i the one i had died after 4 months, when i took it back to PC World i could see a pile of them behind the tech guys counter that had been returned by other customers.

    meant to add,

find out what hard drive you want and then look for it. If you go into the likes of PC World like i did at first, they will recommend anything as they dont seem to have a clue about computers.
I ended up buying my hard drives on amazon and ebay.
