Just following up on this. Forms were posted to HMRC in September but my son is still waiting on an answer. He phoned in November and said they were still working through letters and were only at July enquiries by that point. Would be at least early January before they got to his but not to worry as he wouldn’t miss the chance to buy years back to 2006 even if after the deadline of April 5th.

I don’t particularly trust them with that but I presume he can’t pay for the Class 2 voluntary contributions until they confirm he’s eligible to do so? If that’s the case any ideas on how to hurry them up?

It just sounds like another example of inefficiency and failure in the public sector, but the UK's private sector seems no better if you listen to "You and Your's" on Radio 4. IMO it all stems from under resourcing to maximize profits (or in Government case to minimize budgets and shrink services through "outsourcing") and a management attitude that if you make it difficult for the public to contact you, you can provide minimal or bad service because there's no one to punish you. You can try continued calls, contact your MP and maybe also contact a newspaper or "You and Your's".

so what happened in the end? did he manage to get sorted with class 2 NICs or they came back with something else?
(asking as I am in exactly the same boat...)

Nothing has happened yet. HMRC are only up to post received on 22nd August 2022 for non-EU applications.
