I always thought their corporate ethics needed scrutiny and good ESG independent review, especially after they trousered the COVID rates relief when the vast majority of the major supermarkets (apart from Co op and M&S) returned the money to the taxpayer. Another reason to avoid them until they deal with their corporate culture?

Haven't Tescos and Sainsburys been accused of similar things - buying up tracks of land that might otherwise been developed by rivals?

The large supermarket operators have substantial land banks. One supermarket I had dealings with for work had it's own HQ department for such purposes.

Waitrose were just trying to do the job on the cheap - probably because they don't have the resources to actually buy up the land
