Waitrose broke competition rules and acted against the interests of shoppers to prevent rival supermarkets from opening near its own stores, regulators have found.
Waitrose criticised over unlawful deals with landlords to shut out rivals (msn.com)

I always thought their corporate ethics needed scrutiny and good ESG independent review, especially after they trousered the COVID rates relief when the vast majority of the major supermarkets (apart from Co op and M&S) returned the money to the taxpayer. Another reason to avoid them until they deal with their corporate culture?

Haven't Tescos and Sainsburys been accused of similar things - buying up tracks of land that might otherwise been developed by rivals?

They are all as bad as each other. This is some years old now but tells you exactly how they make their profits:

Unfortunately many of us cannot afford to spend a bit more to keep independent traders open, not when our own money is so hard-earned.

The large supermarket operators have substantial land banks. One supermarket I had dealings with for work had it's own HQ department for such purposes.
  • Read a story online last week when Aldi finally got permission to build a new store in Kent., after ASDA and Lidl put in strong objections to planners for years.

Waitrose were just trying to do the job on the cheap - probably because they don't have the resources to actually buy up the land
