I'm single woman in my 60s. I have a modest income but own an old terraced house outright. It needs upgrading with at least the following work: rewire, damp proofing downstairs in the front room, a couple of windows replacing, floor levelling up in the back reception room, 4 rooms decorating, new flooring/ carpets in three rooms. I have a slush fund and could probably cover this but would it add enough value to the house to make it worthwhile or is it better to sell and put my savings into buying something more modern? Anyone know where I could get some advice on this?

I feel you can't make a decision until you know the costs. My experience is that such repairs don't result in a that value increase, but if you choose to stay obviously its better. I would be tempted to ask this question on the DIY or housing boards, probably the latterI think I saw you in an ice cream parlour

Generally though, you need to think of the costs for selling, moving, buying and stamp duty. What would the value of your house be in its current condition, what would the cost be of a more modern house be and do you actually want to move?
Personally if you are happy where you are living, I would get the windows replaced (immediately makes the house warmer and cuts heating required), wiring done, and investigate why tere is damp in the front room - again the housing part of the forum is good with this, as often if you cure the reason for the damp it will go on its own.
Decorating would be done after rewiring anyway, and flooring could follow if needed. But as I say, work out the approximate costs and pop a post in the housing part of the forumCredit card debt - NIL
