Andrex/Sainsburys (and other supermarkets?) con

Andrex have introduced a new 9 roll classic mega pack with 50% extra. With my basic maths skills that equates to the equivalent of 13.5 rolls.
Not surprisingly the price of the new pack is the same as the previous 16 roll pack. Inflation, fuel costs or the war in Ukraine?

I was told in a local chemist where I buy my tissues and toilet rolls, there is a soft paper goods shortage.    Two pack of Kleenex gents have gone up from £2.49 to £3.99 that is if you can get them.

    Why when it’s only £4.25 for 4 packs? https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/kleenex-mansize-compact-tissues-4-pack-7517336-p?productId=

Because a local chemist doesn't have the purchasing power of a large chain and be able to dictate purchase prices from the manufacturer. They will be buying through a wholesaler, not direct.

But in Sainsbury's, the 2-pack (2 x 90 sheets) offer is "price locked" at £3.75, not so different from the local chemist price.  And is actually the lowest unit (/sheet) price of the Sainsbury's Kleenex extra large tissues.

Yep, the war in Ukraine deffo. Other than wheat fields they’re extremely good at growing loo roll trees. Lovely big fields and perfect climate.

    So that’s one mystery solved.
:D  You do realise that loo rolls literally are trees, though?  And those trees are generally imported, not grown in the UK.

My point to the poster was that it’s nothing to do with a soft paper goods shortage.

I noticed my local Sainsbury's today had a lot of empty shelves around where the toilet rolls usually are.
So there we go, that probably indicates another rush on loo paper just like at the start of the pandemic. Was there some undocumented side effect of Covid-19 that the media kept from us?
The urge to buy the stuff I meant, rather than the need to use it! :)

Not a side effect, just that people don't want to risk running out of it when self-isolating.

If you run out of one type of food you can eat something else, but there's no substitute for toilet roll.
