V2G/V2H compatible cars?

Options
Will it be possible to use CCS or is it not 2 way? I know CHAdeMO are but if that's the only car that can do it, isn't it just going to end up driving up used leaf prices even more?

All cars are compatible, but it depends on how much work you want to do and how integrated a solution you're after.

There's quite a difference between running an inverter from a 12V battery with the traction battery backing it up, to actually having a grid tied system that is DNO approved...

Afaik the CCS V2H/V2G hasn't been finalised yet, but there are trials in other countries that are using CCS for V2G:

    I don't think I claimed otherwise :)  and I did describe it as V2L rather than V2G.
Although I guess you could V2L a 48-volt charger and use that to charge the Pylontech stack on your solar battery?

I understand that this trial was with the Nissan Leaf.

Having proved the concept, I would expect more EV brands to start including V2G capability - if they haven't already.

Funny thing is Ovo ran a V2G trial starting nearly 4 years ago, but his may be the first one that offers grid services....

VW cars are allegedly already V2H complaint and will be rolled out 'soon' with a suitable charger plus a software update.
    I think....

There are more cars becoming available with V2L which can be quite useful. Latest, and cheapest, is MG4.

I have to admit to being surprised that it is only now that the trial has been completed. It felt a long time ago when I first heard about it.

I've just looked up the Ovo trial, the results were published in June 2021. https://www.ovoenergy.com/ovo-newsroom/press-releases/2021/june/worlds-largest-domestic-vehicle-to-grid-trial-reveals-customers-could-recover-the-majority-of-their-household-energy-costs
From what I could see, the objective of the trial was slightly different - more proving the benefits to customers of V2G and whether there is a demand for it. The Octopus trial was about grid balancing, so the ESO were able to control the charge / discharge of the vehicle batteries. Both trials show great promise for the future of V2G, imho.

My next car will definitely have V2G capability. 😀

  • I had an email from indra recently saying their trial of V2H was underway and i could install a charger for 1600 quid... dont think ill bother at that price!
Not sure how well they work alongside existing home battery setup? Anyone got both?

I haven't got either yet but hoping to be included on the Indra trial and waiting for a conventional battery quotation.

£1600 for a home battery system that (in my case) would be 60kWh seems quite a bargain.  I'm expecting my 10kWh quotation to be a lot more than that.

But the two systems have different aims..  10kWh of batteries would 'save' me from exporting much of my excess solar power and should run the house for most of the day providing nothing very 'heavy' is operated  62kWh of car battery should save any exports and might allow some heavier demands to be made (particularly if both batts outputting at same time).

But the car battery would be completely useless if we go out in the car whereas the smaller one would always beavailable.

Compared to previous quotes, that's a really good price.
A typical house using 2900kWh/yr would potentially save £925 a year on the current Octopus Go 7.5p/40p split with that. (The saving will be less due to conversion losses, but even so.)
