Switch from FIT to SEG

Hi All

We are looking for some advice:  when we installed our 9.6kW Solar panels in 2018 (ground mount), our thatched cottage coudl only reach an EPC D rating.  Therefore, our FIT payment is rather low at only 3p per unit.  We went ahead anyway, for the green credentials and since we were looking forward to our next hybrid / electric car.
  • Now we are wondering if we would be better off switching to a SEG payment, I see the payments can be up to 12p per unit so in first glance it appears to be a no-brainer!
  • But what is involved and what other costs are there?
Here’s our situation in detail:
- 3 phase electricity supply, one phase connected to house, annual usage around 10,000kW per year
- 9.6kW ground mount system (feeding 2 of the three phases)
- producing an average of 7.9kW per year
- current payment 3p per unit
- annual earnings currently between £200 and £300 per year from FITS provider British Gas

Thanks in advance for any help…

It may well be a good idea to swap as Octopus Agile (Outgoing) is currently paying very high rates.  However don't forget that you'll only get SEG on your export whereas FIT is on everything you produce.  And of course it's a one way decision.  You will have to have a second generation smart meter.   I think in your situation I would probably make the change.

    Install 28th Nov 15, 3.3kW, (11x300LG), SolarEdge, SW. W Yorks.
    Install 2: Sept 19, 600W SSE

That reads as though you think signing up for SEG would cancel your FIT tariff !  Actually,  you'd just be opting out of the export portion of FIT (worth only a couple of ppu for early adopters) but keeping the generation portion (could be more than 60ppu).

Or if you meant that SEG is on everything you export but the FIT scheme deems export as 'only' half of generation ,  it appears that most people actually export more than the deemed 50%
